Introducing: Baubles From Bones

Baubles From Bones is a Pittsburgh-based zine dedicated to uplifting the voices of aspiring fantasy and sci-fi authors. The heroes of our stories cross swords with the undead and scavenge for supplies on charred planets; they are dreamers who get lost in the stars as well as the haunted wood. Our stories exist in the same space as the lost coins and hair ties that fall between couch cushions; as spent plasma cells and lost cat-bells. Faded pictures. Torn robes. Old Halloween masks. Evidence of the small lives we lead and the dreams we glean from them. We are as passionate about helping authors as we are eager to share their new and adventurous worlds with our audience.

Operating out of a three-bedroom apartment, Baubles From Bones is a passion project run by three friends whose days are spent working unfulfilling full-time jobs. Unhappy stacking boxes and fielding phone calls, in need of a creative outlet, and with a few free evenings a week, we decided to make our own opportunities– both for ourselves and other writers.  Our editorial staff boasts writing degrees, a literature degree, and a few publications. We’re always adding to our to-be-read-lists and love getting lost in the worlds of Tolkien, Gaiman, and Klune. Now we're excited to publish the sorts of stories that inspire us.

​Our current aim is to publish four zines a year, each filled with 100-150 pages of fantastical stories and poetry. All of the writing will be available for free on this site, with digital and physical editions available for purchase on release. But paying our talented writers for their work takes money. That’s where support from Patreon and Ko-fi comes in! While we hope Baubles From Bones can be self-sustaining through book sales, regular support from Patreon and Ko-fi gives our editors the budgetary peace-of-mind they need to keep their sanity from slipping any further.

With enough monthly support, our two main goals are to launch an audio podcast, presenting stories from our latest issue, and raise our payment rates to ensure our zine can grow alongside our writers.

The editorial staff of the BFB Zine is made up of three humans with a love of storytelling and their skeletal pal Baub, whose gem-eyes sparkle with the pains of a thousand dark deeds (as well as an appreciation for 19th century Romantic landscapes).
