Letter From the EditorsHello there, our dear boneyard!
How are you? How are you holding up? We’re happy you’re here. Welcome to Issue 4. I feel like putting this collection together has taken an eon—and to be fair, while it’s been in development, so much has happened and changed. We sent the acceptance letters to these authors way back in October. We saw Thanksgiving. The release of Issue 3! Then Christmas, and then entered a new year. After the holidays, we buckled in. While collaborating with our authors on edits and contracts, Pittsburgh froze over and for the first time in quite a few years, I felt like we really had a taste of true winter. Schools were delayed. The Baubles team trudged through the snow to meet at the Carnegie Library and Cathedral of Learning. We paid our dues at the open-late coffee shops. Our submissions opened and closed in January, and on top of putting the final touches on Issue 4, we’ve entered the depths of our submissions in pursuit of the stories that will make Baubles’ tomorrow. This has all been in the works while dealing with some harrowing stuff, most particularly, the aftershocks of the election. We watched a felon obtain one of the most powerful government offices in the world. Rights have been threatened and stripped away from friends, family, loved ones, and loved places. Tomorrow is an uncertain place. Challenge waits around every, single, corner. But here, we have good stories about endurance, redemption and forgiveness; about the power in the unlikeliest of us, the power of simple acts like breathing; the sanctity of coming together, even when all is just about certainly lost. Evidence that no matter what comes, there is potential in us, perhaps even a little magic. I hope these pages give you the hope they’ve given me. It has been an immense pleasure working with these stories and poems and their wonderful authors. We are ever-thankful for their time, effort, and patience, as well as the love and support from our patrons, the Pittbsurgh zine community, our friends and family—all the sparks that keep us moving forward. I look forward to the stories, conventions, conversations, and more that 2025 has yet to bring for BFB. Many, much, and all my gratitude, Elyse Leskovic P.S.—Syrup, Joel, Shane, I love you guys to death. We made it to four issues!! I cannot thank everyone else, without thanking you. |
