the trick of the necromancer's womb

Devin Miller

what bones have I given birth to,

what necromantic child given life,

what slid from my body into lake-water

and was drowned by wonder?

the trick of the necromancer's womb

is to grow things both living and dead,

children and not-children.

reach into the death-cold lake

and grip the hand that reaches back.

the water is not clear enough to know

if the hand will be skeletal or flesh:

good luck.

love it regardless.

lift the creature newly birthed

into the frosted air, and listen

for its screams.
